Classroom Teacher

Central Islip School District, NY

Yo Bro: Strive Toward Excellence and Sistah Girl: Step Into Your Greatness, each written by Dr. Nay Renee White, have proven to be wonderful reading tools for students in my classroom. These books provide the social and emotional guidance needed in a world that can oftentimes be cruel, confusing and misunderstood by children. The author successfully provides encouragement for students to understand and accept themselves and to embrace their individualities and cultures. The poetry in Dr. White’s books allows students to make self-to-text connections while reading which, in turn, provides enthusiasm for reading.

Knowing Dr. White as an author, as a scholar, and as my professor while pursuing my Master’s Degree, I have personally experienced her passion for empowering anyone she meets. She has a clear and in-depth understanding of literacy strategies and shares this wisdom with ease. Her drive and devotion to help all students strive for excellence is unparalleled. Her heart is golden.
